As a child, I was allowed to choose one book from my Uncle’s collection when he passed away. I chose “Great Artists” by Melvin Bragg, which I truly believe acted as a catalyst for my infatuation with Renaissance art. This infatuation has journeyed with me as an artist and art historian and still informs my practice till this day.
I work mainly with oil paint using the traditional colours and media of Italian Renaissance artists. I paint on wooden panel using linseed oil and gloss to create lustre and have started to experiment with traditional Renaissance grounds. I imitate the artist’s styles as if they were my masters, developing a skilled technique and as Leonardo Da Vinci once said “Poor is the pupil who does not surpass his master.”
I am currently studying Fine Art and Art History at Plymouth University, using both subjects to stimulate each other and shape my practice. My work uniquely considers themes and ideas of Renaissance history and traditional art which I have taken from my studies and related these to modern day topics and philosophies. This comparison makes my work distinctively show how ideologies and beliefs have changed for the good and bad, making bold statements about the modern day.
As Renaissance art has been in the forefront of my artistic life, I believe that works of art need to be conserved and restored for future generations to admire and to be inspired by. Therefore I will be studying a Post Graduate Diploma in easel painting conservation at the Courtauld Institute, London.
